Snuff Quotes
Quotes can often give us
insight into the heart of a subject that
we might not have considered on our
own. They can pierce the vail of
the mundane, and strike at a deeper
poetic truth. Sometimes
they just make us laugh. I've
compiled here some quotes about nasal
snuff tobacco and tobacco in
general. Enjoy!
"Under
the pressure of the cares and
sorrows of our mortal condition, men
have at all times, and in all
countries, called in some physical
aid to their moral consolations -
wine, beer, opium, brandy, or
tobacco."
-Edmund
Burke
"There's nothing quite like
tobacco: it's the passion of decent
folk, and whoever lives without
tobacco doesn't deserve to live."
-Moliere
"Tobacco
is America's greatest gift to the
world!"
-David Hockney
"One of
history’s most esoteric methods of
satisfying a tobacco jones is
making a resurgence as a new
generation of hipsters trade lungs
full of smoke for a nose full of
snuff."
-Michael Calore, Wired
Magazine
"I
thought I couldn't afford to take
her out and smoke as well. So I
gave up cigarettes. Then I took
her out and one day I looked at
her and thought: "Oh well," and I
went back to smoking again, and
that was better."
-Benny Hill
"For
thousands of years, long before
there was such a thing as a
science of chemistry, people were
fascinated by plants, because they
knew that plants contained
substances that could affect
people. Coffee will keep you
awake. Tobacco contains something
that will calm your nerves.
Foxglove contains an extract
that'll affect your heart."
-Gregory Petsko
"Just
where the breath of life his
nostrils drew,
A charge of snuff the wily virgin
threw;
The gnomes direct, to every atom
just,
The pungent grains of titillating
dust,
Sudden, with starting tears each
eye o'erflows,
And the high dome re-echoes to his
nose."
-Alexander
Pope, The Rape
of the Lock

"For
thy sake, tobacco, I would do anything but die."
-Charles Lamb
"Tobacco
is my favorite vegetable."
-Frank Zappa
"And 'twixt his finger and his thumb he held
A pouncet-box, which ever and anon
He gave his nose and took 't away again;
Who therefor angry, when it next came there,
Took it in snuff."
-William Shakespeare, Henry
IV, Part I
"Giving
up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I
know because I've done it thousands of times."
-Mark Twain
"Tobacco,
coffee, alcohol, hashish, prussic acid,
strychnine, are weak dilutions. The surest poison
is time."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
"The
man who smokes, thinks like a sage and acts like a
Samaritan!"
-Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Night
and Morning
"As
concerns tobacco, there are many superstitions.
And the chiefest is this--that there is a STANDARD
governing the matter, whereas there is nothing of
the kind. Each man's own preference is the only
standard for him, the only one which he can
accept, the only one which can command him. A
congress of all the tobacco-lovers in the world
could not elect a standard which would be binding
upon you or me, or would even much influence us."
-Mark Twain
"Tobacco is a dirty weed. I like it.
It satisfies no normal need. I like it.
It makes you thin, it makes you lean,
It takes the hair right off your bean
It's the worst darn stuff I've ever seen.
I like it."
-Graham Lee Hemminger,
Tobacco
"There's
a lot of people who, a cigarette is about the only
vacation they have."
-Trey Parker, Co-Creator of
South Park
"Tobacco
and alcohol, delicious fathers of abiding
friendships and fertile reveries."
-Luis Buñuel
"Tobacco,
divine, rare superexcellent tobacco, which goes
far beyond all panaceas, potable gold and
philosopher's stones, a sovereign remedy to all
diseases."
-Robert Burton, Anatomy of
Melancholy
"Coffee
and tobacco are complete repose."
-Turkish Proverb
"There is a spot on the back of your hand called
the anatomical snuff box which provides a natural
place to dump out some dry-powdered tobacco, and
easily and naturally raise it to your nostril for
snorting. And, since God put it on your body, He
intended it to be used!"
-Guy Named Dave on the
Internet
"I
believe that pipe smoking contributes to a
somewhat calm and objective judgement in all human
affairs."
-Albert Einstein
"I
hated tobacco. I could have almost lent my support
to any institution that had for its object the
putting of tobacco smokers to death...I now feel
that smoking in moderation is a comfortable and
laudable practice, and is productive of good.
There is no more harm in a pipe than in a cup of
tea. You may poison yourself by drinking too much
green tea, and kill yourself by eating too many
beefsteaks. For my part, I consider that tobacco,
in moderation, is a sweetener and equalizer of the
temper."
-Thomas Henry Huxley
"If
you can't send money, send tobacco."
-George Washington to the Continental
Congress, 1776
"Man,
the creature who knows he must die, who has dreams
larger than his destiny, who is forever working a
confidence trick on himself, needs an ally. Mine
has been tobacco."
-John
Boynton Priestley
